Gagan is finally out.
This song started with a fairly simple thought.
No matter where we go, we're still under the same sky.
That's pretty much where Gagan came from.
Gagan literally means "sky", and I liked the idea of using something as huge as the sky to talk about something as simple as missing someone.
Life takes people to different places. Sometimes by choice, sometimes because that's just how life works. You might be in Mumbai, they might be in some completely different country, and yet you're both still looking at the same sky.
Very convenient metaphor, really.
The song is about togetherness despite physical separation.
Not in a very dramatic "our love has been tested by the cruel forces of destiny" kind of way.
More in the "I wish you were here because this would be nicer if you were here" kind of way.
You still go about your life. You go to festivals, meet people, make music, have random good days, random bad days, and generally continue existing.
You just have someone somewhere else who you wish could be part of it.
Musically, I wanted Gagan to have two different sides to it.
A lot of the song is sweet, feel-good, fast-paced pop, but I wanted it to open up into bigger orchestral moments at certain points. So there are strings and cello coming in when the song needs to feel a little bigger.
The vocals also start relatively low and gradually build towards higher notes. Basically, the song starts calmly and then slowly decides it has something to say.
I produced, recorded, mixed and mastered the whole thing myself at my home studio.
Which sounds impressive until you realise my home studio is also just my room.
The music video was a slightly different process.
It's from the male character's point of view, after the girl he loves leaves to go abroad. We never really explain why she leaves. I wanted that to remain unexplained because, well, sometimes people leave and you don't get a convenient screenplay explaining everything.
The video follows his life after that.
Festivals. Shows. Random moments. Music recordings. Calls. Chats. Pictures she sends from her life abroad. Basically, two people trying to remain part of each other's lives while living in completely different places.
And instead of shooting every single thing specifically for the video, I decided to use actual moments from my own life.
So yes, some of the footage you're watching is literally just me living my life and then deciding it belongs in a music video.
My friend Atharva Ghate also helped with cinematography for some of the shots.
I wanted the video to feel less like a perfectly constructed story and more like looking through someone's memories.
Because being apart isn't necessarily just sadness.
Life still happens.
And somewhere in all of that, you miss someone.
That's Gagan.
It's about the idea that physical distance doesn't necessarily make people emotionally distant.
You can be somewhere completely different and still feel connected to someone.
And at the very least, you can look up and know you're both under the same sky.
The music video is out now on the Duende Audio Visuals YouTube channel, and the song is available on all major streaming platforms.
If you've ever had someone far away who still felt close, I hope you find something of yourself in this song.
And if you haven't, that's okay too.
You can still listen to it.
The sky isn't going anywhere.
